Picard helped the two men pack the few necessities they’d need for the trip, then watched as they loaded the Goddard. Scott helped McCoy into the shuttle and strapped him into his seat, enduring mild grumblings from McCoy about his obvious ability to do it himself. Scott exited the shuttle and approached Picard.

“Jean-Luc, I want to thank you again for what you did. Jim was a good man, and you gave him a chance to die the way he wanted to—fighting for something important.”

Picard nodded. “It would be nice to be able to pick the time and place of our last moments. I can only hope that I can do as well as Kirk.”

“I’m sure you’ll do just fine, Jean-Luc.” Scott offered his hand, which Picard gladly shook. “Take care of yourself. Maybe we’ll pay you a visit after we’re done on Veridian III.”

Picard nodded. “Any time, Scotty. You and Leonard are always welcome on the Enterprise.”

He watched Scott enter the shuttle and cycle the hatch shut. His gaze followed the shuttle as it lifted off from the grass and gracefully arced up into the sky and out of sight. Turning back, Picard allowed himself to indulge in a long walk in the tall grass. He’d return to the Enterprise soon enough, but for now, he was on his own time.
